The Super Parental Guardians  is undeniably another box office success from duo Vice Ganda and Coco Martin. Without opening on an MMFF season, the film has still managed to pull in a huge number that no MMFF movie this year can achieve and is still playing in theaters outside of Metro Manila. What does this mean to this year's MMFF entries and the whole box office in the country? First of all, Both  The Super Parental Guardians and Enteng Kabisote 10 were rejected from this year's MMFF. This lead them to releasing both movies on an earlier date. Releasing on Bonifacio Day was proven to be a success. Parental Guardians  broke the record for the biggest opening day gross for a local movie. And the movie continued to lead the box office until Rogue One started playing. This should be good news right? If Vice Ganda can broke records 1 month away from MMFF season and can still play during the said festival, this would mean more money which is the first reason why they want to ent

The MMFF season has officially started. And as of 8PM yesterday (Christmas Day), Vince and Kath and James is (ofcourse) leading the box office race. The romantic comedy movie from Star Cinema will likely be in this position until the end of this race.

Vince and Kath and James  This year, Metro Manila Film Festival  has changed the game. And with this, surefire blockbuster hits such as  The Super Parental Guardians, Enteng Kabisote 10, and Mano Po 7  were rejected making the box office success of this year's festival uncertain. Which movie could become the next English Only, Please? Can these eight attract the huge family audience? Let's take a look at the official eight entries of the 2016 Metro Manila Film Festival.

The Super Parental Guardians Local blockbuster films such as  The Super Parental Guardians and Imagine You & Me  are also released on some international markets. But local outlets rarely gives data from here (even local box office numbers as well).And now, here are some international numbers for The Unmarried Wife  and the two movies said earlier given by  The Numbers   and Box Office Mojo . And yes, it is more likely that the data is not complete.

Another rejected long running MMFF movie franchise has opened in our theaters. Mano Po 7: Chinoy  starring Richard Yap in the lead role opened to a decent PHP 4 million  last December 14. This is lower than the previous entry, Mano Po: A Mother's Love 's PHP 6.9 million opening 7 years ago. But again, this didn't opened to an MMFF season like it usually does and Mano Po movies aren't really connected at all so this is basically within its cast lead by Mr. Yap. With Rogue One: A Star Wars Story  dominating the theaters, this is likely the counter-programming movie for the audience (alongside the still strong The Super Parental Guardians). Moana The good times at the box office keep rolling. Three films all reach huge milestones in the box office. Let's start the breakdown, Vice Ganda's The Super Parental Guardians  has now passed the PHP 300 million mark as of December 8 (5 PM). Of course, the movie remains the number one movie in the box office right now. With another weekend coming, expect another huge addition to its numbers. The only problem coming from this movie is next week's Rogue One which will eat a huge part of its screenings.  Another Star Cinema feature The Unmarried Wife  passed the PHP 200 million mark and is climbing to PHP 250 million. As of December 8, the adult drama has collected PHP 246.9 million in the box office. It has now officially passed Angelica Panganiban-Dingdong Dantes previous film One More Try.  Meanwhile, Disney's Moana  also had a fantastic opening week in the country. Audiences once again flocked to The Super Parental Guardians  yesterday (Sunday). ABSCBN is now reporting a PHP 246.9 million  5-day gross for the Vice Ganda-Coco Martin movie. This beats last year's PHP 200 million 5-day gross of Star Cinema's A Second Chance . Removing the PHP 150 million reported, Parental Guardians  has collected PHP 96.9 million from Saturday afternoon to Sunday. That's again an impressive number. It's almost on the heels of Hollywood Blockbusters' performance here in the country ( Batman v Superman  currently has the highest opening day record with PHP 86.65 million). Combining this number with the grosses from Enteng Kabisote 10  and Moana , this is overall an impressive weekend for the box office while individual reports for both movies have not been released yet. Fantastic Beasts Thanks to a lack of competition last weekend, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them  and The Unmarried Wife  continued to rule the country before The Super Parental Guardians  and Enteng Kaisote  enters the marketplace.

The Super Parental Guardians UPDATE (12/9, 4:44 AM): Disney is reporting a huge PHP 24.9 million  first day gross for Moana, breaking the record of Minions  (PHP 22.9 million) for all time biggest opening day gross for an animated film in the country. To see who got the big portion of the gross, click  HERE , UPDATE (10/1, 7:57 PM): TV Patrol reports that Guardians opened to PHP 75 million on its first day, higher than the previously reported PHP 68 million. It's a very early Christmas for Star Cinema. The Super Parental Guardians  opened to a smashing PHP 75  68 million (according to Star Cinema). This beats My Bebe Love 's PHP 60 million opening last year as the highest grossing opening day gross. One interesting fact is that Bebe Love  opened on Christmas Day (MMFF) while Guardians  opened on Bonifacio Day which also made people flocked into shopping malls. Enteng Kabisote 10 In a (not so for me) surprising turn of events, a Vice Ganda and a Vic Sotto movie didn't made the cut for this year's Metro Manila Film Festival. It's a bold move for the said festival since these two figures usually gives the biggest box office share. And for another surprising turn of events, these two are going to be released almost a month before the festival. The question now becomes: With Christmas Audience out of reach (for now) and Disney's  Moana  also in play (and holdovers  The Unmarried Wife  and  Fantastic Beasts ) how will these two fare outside MMFF?

Angelica Panganiban & Dingdong Dantes in  The Unmarried Wife A fantastic week indeed. Star Cinema's The Unmarried Wife  and Warner Bros' Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find When were both off to fantastic starts. It's interesting that both opened at the same week (only separated by their opening days which was only one day apart) and managed to open well without hurting each other. It's something that only happens during the MMFF season. It also proves how large and diverse the audiences are now here in the Philippines. So, let's start the breakdown:

My grade would be from 1 to 5. 1. Suicide Squad  (2016 | Action | US) Review: It's still on the DCEU - dark (some too dimmed action scenes). It's is also, like BvS , poorly edited, fast-paced, and messy (thanks to a big number of characters). What saved this movie is that it's load of fun scenes. Margot Robbie & Will Smith were both great as Harley Quinn and Deadshot. Viola Davis is striking as Amanda Waller. Jared Leto's Joker is a creepy one. He's iteration of Joker is way far from Heath Ledger which is interesting. Perhaps a longer screen time in the future would be needed. The movie's villain is not that compelling. Suicide Squad For WB, It feels good to be bad. Suicide Squad  opened to a strong PHP 161 million. It's admittedly lower than this year's superhero pics Batman v Superman, Captain America 3, &  X-Men: Apocalypse, thanks to its R-13 rating here in the country, but the fact that it still managed to collect that amount is remarkable despite its rating and has also beaten Deadpool 's PHP 120-130 million opening. This huge opening is largely due to the interesting concept of the movie and a great marketing campaign executed by Warner Bros. Also, this marks the first appearance of Jared Leto's Joker  which attracted a lot of people. We can also add the movie debut of Harley Quinn  (portayed by Margot Robbie) and Deadshot  (portrayed by Hollywood Superstar, Will Smith). How to Be Yours The good times at Star Cinema stopped, at least for the moment. Critically acclaimed  How to Be Yours  starring Bea Alonso & Gerald Anderson earned a low PHP 10 million on its first day. That's lower than Bea Alonso's 2015 films A Second Chance (PHP 43.3 million) & The Love Affair (PHP 15 million) and her lowest opening in 4 years ( 24/7 In Love)  but a bit higher than Gerald Anderson's previous movie Always Be My Maybe (PHP 10 million) .  What happened? A Bea Alonso romantic movie is a sure-fire hit and yes this might also be considered a hit. But Ms. Alonso's box office standards are not like this.Three Reasons came up into my mind. One: the release date. Coming off from the success of Imagine You & Me  plus the opening of Jason Bourne  this week (plus Star Trek Beyond and Lights Out  targets their target audience) and the opening of hotly anticipated Suicide Squad  next week, this is a surprisingly crowded market for How to Be Yours

After weeks of so-so box office, it has waken up this week. Thanks to the strong but 'disappointing' PHP 120 million debut of Aldub's Imagine You & Me   which proved the strength of its fanbase and an okay opening for Ghostbusters.

Imagine You & Me APT Entertainment (from GMA's 24 Oras) has reported that Imagine You & Me  starring Alden Richards and Maine Mendoza has earned PHP 21.5 million on its first day. That's the highest opening day gross for a local movie this year beating Just the 3 Of Us' 16 million. Again, this is lower than their previous movie-starrer My Bebe Love (60 million). Also, this is the highest grossing opening day gross for a non-MMFF movie from GMA Films which is a big achievement in the times that Star Cinema has been in this average in their movies.

Imagine You & Me Aldub's new hit movie Imagine You & Me  opened to PHP 21. 5 million [UPDATED]  (from the previous est. PHP 13 millio . That's a strong start for a local pic in the coun)ntry but this is obviously lower than their previous movie My Bebe Love which currently has the throne of the highest opening day gross for a local movie but that, of course, was released on MMFF season and with Aldub still on peak. And what's more surprising is that it's in line with last year's The Breakup Playlist (July 1) which opened to PHP 18 million.  Yes, 21 million is big. But the problem here is: Star Cinema's monthly movies have a usual opening day gross of around PHP 12-16 million (with Just the 3 Of Us leading with 16 million). Check out the first trailer of How to Be Yours featuring the first team-up of Gerald Anderson & Bea Alonso.  Directed by Dan Villgeas, How to Be Yours  is a story about two people who met and fell in love. Nino (Gerald Anderson), a sales agents who's bent on attaining stability and Anj (Bea Alonso), a self-taught cook who dreams of working in a high-end restaurant someday. Independence Day: Resurgence Box Office Mojo and Deadline reports about the Philippines Box Office have been rarer than ever. But now, (June 22-26), Independence Day: Resurgence  debuts strong with $2.13 million (almost PHP 100 million), enough to likely get the first week for the week. Also, here are the updates for our Summer Blockbusters.

Ian Veneracion & Jodi Sta. Maria in The Achy Breaky Hearts The good times in Star Cinema  continues to roll. Their latest feature, The Achy Breaky Hearts  starring Jodi Sta. Maria, Ian Veneracion & Richard Yap, earned a strong PHP 14 million. This marks as the fourth Star Cinema movie this year to pass the 10 million opening day gross. This shows that the loveteam of Jodi Sta. Maria to these two guys (Richard Yap from the massive hit Be Careful with My Heart and Ian Veneracion from Pangako Sa'Yo ). This also strengthens the fact that Star Cinema  knows how to market their movies considering the movie was announced just around two months ago. While the good opening gives us a mindset that the romantic comedy movie can pass 100 million, the strong competition in the coming weeks will hinder the movie from reaching it (most especially, Imagine You & Me  on July 15 together with Ghostbusters  and Ice Age 5 ) Photo Source: Rappler

My grade would be from 1 to 5. [SPOILERS BELOW]  1. Finding Dory  (2016| Animation | US) Although not as high as Finding Dory/Inside Out, Pixar does it again. Finding Dory is fun, sweet and nostaligic. Ellen Degeneres brings out the best in Dory. All the supporting characters did great. And the [SPOILERS] end credits scene was fun! Love to see all the previous characters in this movie. It is clearly a strong (not super strong) sequel to a 'legacy'.  Grade:  4/5 2. GMA has finally released a sneak peek for the much-anticipated Aldub movie  Imagine You & Me . This movie is a test for the Aldub loveteam if they could still draw a huge audience now that they're out of the MMFF territory ( My Bebe Love   earned PHP 385 million) and the buzz has decreased significantly lately. The film will open on  July 13  where it is expected to battle with the new  Ghostbusters  movie and  The Purge: Anarchy  and  Star Trek: Beyond  the following week. Watch the trailer below:

 Everything they've built will fall! And from the ashes of their world, we'll build a better one! Everything fall! And from the ashes,  X-Men: Apocalypse  risen to top spot. According to Deadline , the mutants amassed PHP 230 million in its opening week. That's above 2014's Days of Future Past  which collected est. $ 4 million (est. PHP 176 million) on its first week. This is a very good number considering three weeks ago we just had a tentpole superhero movie (namely Civil War ).

The good times of Star Cinema in the box office continues. Love Me Tomorrow  opens to PHP 13 million on its first day. That's in line with this year's recent openings ( Just the 3 of Us  got PHP 15 million, Always Be My Maybe  got PHP 8 million). This is also in line with the previous efforts of the lead actors of the movie (Piolo Pascual's  The Breakup Playlist  & Dawn Zulueta's  The Love Affair  both opened to PHP 15 million while Coleen Garcia's  Ex with Benefits  got PHP 8 million).

My grade would be from 1 to 5. [SPOILERS BELOW] 1. X-Men: Apocalypse  (2016| Action | US) Last night, we watched the 3D screening of Apocalypse . It's visually great. The 'new' characters are great. Sophie Turner's Jean Grey is one. Evan Peter's Quicksilver once again steals the spotlight.  Meanwhile, Apocalypse is a so-so villain. The big three in DOFP (Mystique, Professor X and Magneto) were given a not so great plots, most especially   Jennifer Lawrence's Mystique. The highlight turned into the newbies. Overall, X-Men Apocalypse is a great addition to the franchise. Sadly, it's coming out after Days of Future Past which is amazing and Captain America: Civil War  which is also a Marvel movie. Watch the trailer of  Assassin's Creed starring Michael Fassbender (Steve Jobs, X-Men: Apocalypse) and Marion Cotillard (The Dark Knight Rises, Two Days One Night). Callun Lynch discovers he is a descendant of the secret Assassins society throught unlocked genetic memories that allow him to relive the adventures of his ancestor, Aguilar, in 15th century spain. While Civil War  passed the PHP 500 million mark, Star Cinema's Just the 3 of Us has also passed an important milestone. Star Cinema is reporting that the John Lloyd Cruz-Jennylyn Mercado starrer has passed the 100 million mark. This is a very good number for a movie which has a tough competition. It would be interesting if the movie can pass PHP 200 million by the end of its run (local movies tend to drop roughly on their second week of showing). There are no new reports for This Time 's box office receipts. Previously, it was reported that the JaDine movie grossed PHP 15 million on its first day.

Chris Evans and Sebastian Stan in Captain America: Civil War Captain America: Civil War  continues to dominate the country (and the whole world). Deadline.com  is reporting a $ 11.9 million total gross for the superhero pic here in the country. In peso that would be around PHP 560 million (using $1 = 46 PHP). Removing last week's PHP 362 million opening, this would give us a est. PHP 198 million gross for Civil War for this week (May 2-8, 2016). That should put it above Just the 3 of Us  and This Time .  This week, it will face The Angry Birds Movie  which is expected to do okay business and it looks like Civil War  will still rule the country for atleast another week. What a lovely day in the box office. James Reid & Nadine Lustre in This Time Earlier today, I reported the PHP 16 million opening of Just the 3 of Us  which is remarkable considering its R-rating which proves that it captured an older audience.

This coming-of-different ages films shows how age doesn't matter this 2016. In the story, Piolo plays as JC, a happy-go-lucky DJ who will find meaning in life when he meets Dawn's character Cristy. Meanwhile, Coleen is Janine, a young socialite who will cross paths and forges friendship with Dawn's character - a married fashion designer. Audiences welcomed the new tandem of John Lloyd Cruz and Jennylyn Mercado. Just the 3 of Us  opened to PHP 16 million. Jolina Magdangal announced this on Magandang Buhay (May 5 episode). Although this is lower than Alonso-Cruz starrer A Second Chance  (PHP 43 million, but this is a much awaited sequel), this was ahead of 2016 Star Cinema films Everything About Her (PHP 15 million) & Always be my Maybe  (PHP 8 million). This also proves that Filipino movies can compete with foreign releases as long as they are targeting opposite demographic ( Civil War  is for action/adventure fans; Just the 3  for romantic fans). There is still the fun that we used to have for Marvel movies but there is a hint of them being more darker and bolder. And that is good. It's Marvel Time! Captain America: Civil War is off to a strong start in the country.  Deadline  reports that the supehero pic opened to $ 1.5 million getting a massive 97% share of the marketplace. They are also reporting that the movie is 154% above Captain America: The Winter Soldier  but 4% below Avengers: Age of Ultron . This is below Batman v Superman 's est. 1.8 million opening though its unfair to compare that from Civil War  since BvS  opened on Black Saturday.

#WhoWillWin? It's Warner Bros. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice opened to PHP 86.6 million. That's the biggest single day opening gross in the country beating last year's Avengers: Age of Ultron 's PHP 72.7 million (though Age of Ultron  opened on Wednesday while Dawn of Justice  opened on Saturday). It is also the highest grossing single day gross for a movie in the country, beating Age of Ultron 's PHP 83.2 million. Again, it has beaten Age of Ultron 's PHP 83.2 million for the highest grossing Saturday gross ever. Over the past few years, Easter weekend has become a great time for opening a movie and Dawn of Justice  continues to prove that. Dawn of Justice The battle is finally coming. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice  arrives in Philippine theaters this Black Saturday. The superhero pic will also open in all countries in the world including China. Marketing has been strong. Product tie-in continues to increase leading up to the release date (With Petron & Smart leading of the TV ads). Can the movie accomplish the target of Warner Bros.?

Batman  from the LEGO Movie, the 2014 surprise hit, is getting his own movie! Starring Will Arnett as the Dark Knight and directed by Chris McKay. The trailer features the Batcave and the Justice League in action. Woah! This shows that the LEGO Batman Movie will feature the Justice League earlier  than the live action Justice League movie! The Divergent Series: Allegiant opened last Wednesday (March 9) in the country. According to  Deadline , the sci-fi chalked up $ 140k in 160 screens (PHP 6.58 million). That's a fine opening. Meanwhile, in overseas total, the industry is projecting a $ 30-40 million opening in 45 markets. Allegiant stars Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Miles Teller & Ansel Elgort. cast of Gods of Egypt Box Office Mojo is reporting a PHP 115 million opening for Zoolander No. 2 but Deadline.com  is reporting a $ 3.2 million (est. 140+ million) overseas gross of Zoolander No. 2  for this weekend so the numbers are likely to be inflated. It may be the first 'flop' of 2016 but there is a strong interest here in the country for Gods of Egypt . The fantasy pic debuted at 1st place with PHP 81 million. That's a strong opening for an original pic here in the country. This proves that the reviews and negative buzz over the film didn't stop the moviegoers to watch the pic. Social engagement for the movie has been strong in the country.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice  has began selling tickets yesterday in the United States. According to  Movie Pilot , the movie is already no. 1 in its trending charts (which is really  not surprising). Warner Bros. has also released new stickers on its Facebook page. There are also reports saying that Gal Gadot's 'Wonder Woman' stole the show in the movie. Here's my short review/reaction of the latest movies I've watched (in no particular order). For reviews only: I will also add here my review/reaction from the US TV shows that I watch. My grade would be from 1 to 5. 1.  Kung Fu Panda 3 Review: On its third outing, 'Kung Fu Panda 3' still shines (story and visuals) although this is not as strong as the previous entries. Rating: 3/5 2. The Big Bang Theory  - Season 9, Episode 17 : The Celebration Experimentation Review : In its 200th episode, The Big Bang Theory draws big laughs but not a big heart. Rating: 3/5

Deadpool (picture from: Screen Rant) The world is talking about Deadpool and Philippines is no exception. The R-rated Marvel superhero debuted to PHP 145.96 million. That's a very remarkable opening for an R rated movie here in the country. The opening is also way higher than last year's Fifty Shades of Grey opening (though that movie were shown in less screens). A lot of factors can be attributed to this fantastic opening. One, it has a very strong social engagement. Ever since the movie was revealed, social media went outburst and in the past few weeks, the talk is all about Deadpool . Two, the movie opened on Valentine's Day which makes it a top choice for couples (adult couples or even teen couples). Lastly, it's a Marvel movie. Marvel movies are strong here in the country and Deadpool also gets help from that.
