PH Box Office: Strong 'Civil War' opened more like 'Avengers' than 'Captain America'

It's Marvel Time!

Captain America: Civil War is off to a strong start in the country. Deadline reports that the supehero pic opened to $ 1.5 million getting a massive 97% share of the marketplace. They are also reporting that the movie is 154% above Captain America: The Winter Soldier but 4% below Avengers: Age of Ultron. This is below Batman v Superman's est. 1.8 million opening though its unfair to compare that from Civil War since BvS opened on Black Saturday.

The superhero pic's huge opening is largely because on marketing, this became more like an Avengers  movie rather than a solo Captain  America movie. It features an ensemble cast leading off with Iron Man (the most popular one), Winter Soldier, Ant-Man, Black Widow and more. What's also intriguing is that the Avengers team was divided into two with Iron Man & Captain America leading both team making this a bigger event movie than last year's Age of Ultron (which was considered as 'another' Avengers movie) although we have already a superhero battle this year (ehem BvS). Also, this also marks the first appearance of Black Panther which makes it a must-see for the fans. And more importantly, SPIDERMAN.

Tom Holland's Spiderman debuts on
Captain America: Civil War
Civil War features the new rebooted Spiderman now portrayed by Tom Holland. After the 'disappointing' results of Amazing Spiderman 2, Sony wants to reboot Spiderman (again) and be a pat of the MCU (of Disney). This is also one of the most anticipated parts of this movie. But how big can Spiderman add to the gross of Civil War? It is highly likely that the audience of Amazing Spiderman  and Avengers are similar since they are more younger compare to the DC Extended Universe but what adds exposure to this movie is that this is the first time Spiderman enters the Marvel Cinematic Universe making Civil War a bigger event film.

Marketplace right now is weaker thanks to the underperformance of The Huntsman: Winter's War; The Jungle Book is declining and Dawn of Justice began leaving the theaters. Also, Star Cinema's Just the 3 Of Us pushed its release date (now scheduled to be on May 5) making it the only release for this week (ofcourse, who will be brave to open alongside Civil War?).

But still, let us remember (as the title suggests), this is a Captain America movie so that reduces the exposure of the movie to attract the general audiences who watched the Avengers 1 & 2. Nevertheless, thanks to the great marketing of Disney, they've make sure that this just not a Captain America movie.

VERDICT: Captain America: Civil War is going to earn Avengers-like. PHP 350 million is a lock.
