The smiles at Warner Bros. must have been continuing. Wonder Woman  has now passed the PHP 400 million mark in the country.

Wonder Woman It's a wonderful week for Warner Bros. Coming off from the disappointing King Arthur: Legend of the Sword , the studio is back on top again with Wonder Woman .

It was just confirmed today  (May 30, 2017) that Liza Soberano is the new Darna . After a long wait of finding out who will replace Ms. Angel Locsin in the iconic superhero. I can already smell the controversy it can surround but box office wise, it makes sense.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 It's the time of the year when everyone is anticipating a new Marvel movie. This time its the sequel to the surprise breakout hit of 2014. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 opened to a strong PHP 159.32 million. See more of the breakdown below:

After a strong $ 3.2 million opening of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2  last week, the healthy (not huge) box office looks to continue this May. Alongside the openings of Alien: Covenant, King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, and Pirates of the Caribbean 5 , the local cinema has also something to compete. Regal Entertainment will release Ai Ai Delas Alas' Our Mighty Yaya. Jodi Sta. Maria's star power will be tested with Dear Other Self.  Also, war movie Ang Araw sa Likod Mo  and thriller Bliss  will try to capture audience. Here's our forecast: Our Mighty Yaya (May 10) Comedy Queen Ai Ai Delas Alas has been one of the most bankable movie stars of the local cinema. Starting with the record-breaking Ang Tanging Ina  (which was the highest grossing film at that time), her movies with this type of setting work well in the box office. It's a calm in the box office before the storm comes (the trio consisting of  The Fate of the Furious, Can't Help Falling in Love, & Boss Baby ). Beauty and the Beast  easily remained on the top position earning PHP 24.99 million this week.

It's two straight weeks of strong box office ( Logan  and Kong ) and this week's no different with the debut of Disney's Beauty and the Beast (2017) . The tale as old as time starring Emma Watson in the titular role opened to a magical $5.9 million in the country. This is the fourth biggest opening in the country, according to Disney. The opening also beats the total numbers of The Jungle Book, Cinderella and Alice in the Wonderland  in the country. It wouldn't be surprising if it holds next week and $ 10 million is very likely for this film. Thriller Get Out opened decently with $80K across 50 screens. After last week's strong debut for Logan ( est. PHP 100M), the good times in the box office continues to roll. This week, its Kong: Skull Island who delivered strong numbers on its opening.

It's a so-so week in the box office. Critically-acclaimed and Golden Globes winner  La La Land opened to solid numbers as well as Patriots Day. Star Cinema hasn't released any numbers for Extra Service  which is not good for the action comedy movie. Here are the box office numbers for the following movies as of January 15, 2017. This is an incomplete list (with Box Office Mojo no longer posting a list):

Suicide Squad For WB, It feels good to be bad. Suicide Squad  opened to a strong PHP 161 million. It's admittedly lower than this year's superhero pics Batman v Superman, Captain America 3, &  X-Men: Apocalypse, thanks to its R-13 rating here in the country, but the fact that it still managed to collect that amount is remarkable despite its rating and has also beaten Deadpool 's PHP 120-130 million opening. This huge opening is largely due to the interesting concept of the movie and a great marketing campaign executed by Warner Bros. Also, this marks the first appearance of Jared Leto's Joker  which attracted a lot of people. We can also add the movie debut of Harley Quinn  (portayed by Margot Robbie) and Deadshot  (portrayed by Hollywood Superstar, Will Smith). In the marketing department, the trailers are selling this movie as DC's Guardians of the Galaxy showing the fun interactions, slo-mo action scenes and catchy songs of the movie. Like BvS...

How to Be Yours The good times at Star Cinema stopped, at least for the moment. Critically acclaimed  How to Be Yours  starring Bea Alonso & Gerald Anderson earned a low PHP 10 million on its first day. That's lower than Bea Alonso's 2015 films A Second Chance (PHP 43.3 million) & The Love Affair (PHP 15 million) and her lowest opening in 4 years ( 24/7 In Love)  but a bit higher than Gerald Anderson's previous movie Always Be My Maybe (PHP 10 million) .  What happened? A Bea Alonso romantic movie is a sure-fire hit and yes this might also be considered a hit. But Ms. Alonso's box office standards are not like this.Three Reasons came up into my mind. One: the release date. Coming off from the success of Imagine You & Me  plus the opening of Jason Bourne  this week (plus Star Trek Beyond and Lights Out  targets their target audience) and the opening of hotly anticipated Suicide Squad  next week, this is a surprisingly crowde...

Imagine You & Me APT Entertainment (from GMA's 24 Oras) has reported that Imagine You & Me  starring Alden Richards and Maine Mendoza has earned PHP 21.5 million on its first day. That's the highest opening day gross for a local movie this year beating Just the 3 Of Us' 16 million. Again, this is lower than their previous movie-starrer My Bebe Love (60 million). Also, this is the highest grossing opening day gross for a non-MMFF movie from GMA Films which is a big achievement in the times that Star Cinema has been in this average in their movies.

Independence Day: Resurgence Box Office Mojo and Deadline reports about the Philippines Box Office have been rarer than ever. But now, (June 22-26), Independence Day: Resurgence  debuts strong with $2.13 million (almost PHP 100 million), enough to likely get the first week for the week. Also, here are the updates for our Summer Blockbusters.

 Everything they've built will fall! And from the ashes of their world, we'll build a better one! Everything fall! And from the ashes,  X-Men: Apocalypse  risen to top spot. According to Deadline , the mutants amassed PHP 230 million in its opening week. That's above 2014's Days of Future Past  which collected est. $ 4 million (est. PHP 176 million) on its first week. This is a very good number considering three weeks ago we just had a tentpole superhero movie (namely Civil War ).

The Divergent Series: Allegiant opened last Wednesday (March 9) in the country. According to  Deadline , the sci-fi chalked up $ 140k in 160 screens (PHP 6.58 million). That's a fine opening. Meanwhile, in overseas total, the industry is projecting a $ 30-40 million opening in 45 markets. Allegiant stars Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Miles Teller & Ansel Elgort. It is now showing in PH theaters nationwide!

Deadpool (picture from: Screen Rant) The world is talking about Deadpool and Philippines is no exception. The R-rated Marvel superhero debuted to PHP 145.96 million. That's a very remarkable opening for an R rated movie here in the country. The opening is also way higher than last year's Fifty Shades of Grey opening (though that movie were shown in less screens). A lot of factors can be attributed to this fantastic opening. One, it has a very strong social engagement. Ever since the movie was revealed, social media went outburst and in the past few weeks, the talk is all about Deadpool . Two, the movie opened on Valentine's Day which makes it a top choice for couples (adult couples or even teen couples). Lastly, it's a Marvel movie. Marvel movies are strong here in the country and Deadpool also gets help from that.

The Michael Bay drama 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi opened good in the country. It has collected $ 250 k (est PHP 11.7 million). That was way higher than the openings of recent related pics Zero Dark Thirty (up 178%) and Argo (up 135%). In the United States, the film has already collected a decent $ 42.57 million in three weeks of release there. The 5th Wave debuts strong on Philippines Box Office.The science fiction thriller films opened to $ 1.1 million ( Est. PHP 52 million) in the country. That's a strong opening for a January opening. This proves that the combination of the popular Chloe Grace Moretz (popular in the teen demographic in the country) and the sci-fi theme. Meanwhile, the movie opened to a so-so $ 10.7 million  in the United States box office which ranks sixth, behind holdovers The Revenant ($ 16 million), Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($ 14.2 million), & Ride Along 2 ($ 12.9 million) and newcomers Dirty Grandpa starring Robert De Niro and Zac Efron ($ 11.52 million) & The Boy ($ 11.26 million).
