Deadpool (picture from: Screen Rant) The world is talking about Deadpool and Philippines is no exception. The R-rated Marvel superhero debuted to PHP 145.96 million. That's a very remarkable opening for an R rated movie here in the country. The opening is also way higher than last year's Fifty Shades of Grey opening (though that movie were shown in less screens). A lot of factors can be attributed to this fantastic opening. One, it has a very strong social engagement. Ever since the movie was revealed, social media went outburst and in the past few weeks, the talk is all about Deadpool . Two, the movie opened on Valentine's Day which makes it a top choice for couples (adult couples or even teen couples). Lastly, it's a Marvel movie. Marvel movies are strong here in the country and Deadpool also gets help from that.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens Star Wars: The Force Awakens debuts strong in the Philippines. It opened to around PHP 188-190 million in its first week. That's way above the previous Star Wars debuts in the country. It might (I think it already is) already be the highest grossing Star Wars movie in the country. But the opening was not as high as the debuts of Marvel movies here although its unfair to compare with Marvel because Marvel is way more popular than Star Wars here in the country. The Force Awakens has 4 days remaining before the 2015 MMFF arrives (where only local movies are allowed to be screened except for IMAX) so audiences who wants to see Star Wars will be forced to pay higher or wait for it to return in 2016. If this plays like the previous three Hobbit movies (which were all released the week before MMFF), Episode VII will end up earning around PHP 440-450 million which will put in level with the country's highest grossing films which is good conside...
