Box office-wise, Liza Soberano as 'Darna' makes sense - Opinion Board

It was just confirmed today (May 30, 2017) that Liza Soberano is the new Darna. After a long wait of finding out who will replace Ms. Angel Locsin in the iconic superhero. I can already smell the controversy it can surround but box office wise, it makes sense.


Liza Soberano, as I've mentioned many times before, is one of the most popular actress in the country. She, together with his partner Enrique Gil, proved her capability to sell a movie with her latest hit My Ex and Whys. That movie bested the total gross of other famous love teams in the country such as Imagine You & Me (AlDub) and Barcelona: A Love Untold (KathNiel). 

Also, overseas numbers are becoming bigger lately. Superhero pic Wonder Woman, played by Gal Gadot (which has a resemblance on Ms. Soberano and could be Darna's inspiration), will open the world for a big budgeted female superhero movie. If Star Cinema gives this a strong production team (CGI department!), they can sell this movie to a bigger overseas audience with Soberano as the lead.

Among the choices that appeared online, Liza has no doubt the advantage. Together with the direction of Erik Matti (OTJ, Tiktik, Seklusyon) and the marketing machine of Star Cinema, it is likely that we're in good hands with Ms. Soberano. Ding, ang bato!
