There's another 'War': 'Just the 3 of Us' vs. 'This Time'
Captain America: Civil War is making waves around the country. It opened to huge numbers last Wednesday (full report HERE). But next week, there's another 'war' that's going to happen. Star Cinema's Just the 3 of Us which stars John Lloyd Cruz and Jennylyn Mercado is opening against Viva Films' This Time which features the hit love team JaDine. Which side are you on?
First of all, Just the 3 of Us was originally scheduled to open this week alongside Civil War. But of course, that's not a great idea. The movie will be buried of the buzz from the new Marvel movie. Although the audience (& fans) seems to be different between the two (Civil War is male-skewed while; Just the 3 of Us is female-skewed), it will reduce the opportunity of Just the 3 of Us to attract common audiences.
Now, this has to open. Both movies will open on the same week. What could happen? Just the 3 Of Us is a romantic comedy while This Time is a romantic drama. For Just the 3 Of Us, it could attract bigger audience since romantic comedy is easier to watch. John Lloyd Cruz is a box office star but he's not partnering with women who he has a built in audience as well (Basha-Popoy, Bea Alonso, Sarah Geronimo & Toni Gonzaga). Jennylyn Mercado is more popular these days thanks to her exposure in MMFF but it remains a question if the two could work well. Her award-friendly performance and John Lloyd Cruz's power could be just enough for this to be successful but don't expect a Second Chance numbers.
UPDATED: I've confirmed that Just the 3 of Us is R13 which means it would be a big reason for the movie to gross less than it could since teen audience might flock to This Time and Civil War.
Meanwhile, VIVA Films is also opening romantic drama This Time which features James Reid and Nadine Lustre on the same week as Just the 3. Coming off from their hit tv show On The Wings of Love, the two partnered again for this movie. This couple has a less but strong fanbase than Kathniel (even LizQuen). They could easily get their fans than the Star Cinema movie but here's a thing: They're selling the movie as a romantic drama & JaDine's genre is usually romantic comedy but now they're doing a romantic drama which is a big factor for ticket buying decision for regular moviegoers.
And their biggest battle? They will be facing off Captain America: Civil War which is coming off from a strong opening.
VERDICT: Just the 3 of Us will tests Cruz's bankability (removing his solo films). Anything above PHP 100 million is a win. This Time doesn't need to reach that. Anything above PHP 50 million is okay. Both numbers are decent but could be bigger if the two didn't open on the same time.
