MMFF 2016 Day 1: 'Vince and Kath and James' leads; 'Die Beautiful' beats 'Ang Babae sa Septic Tank 2'; 'Seklusyon' finds audience

The MMFF season has officially started. And as of 8PM yesterday (Christmas Day), Vince and Kath and James is (ofcourse) leading the box office race. The romantic comedy movie from Star Cinema will likely be in this position until the end of this race.

In second place, Die Beautiful starring Paolo Ballesteros managed to beat a PG-13 comedy, ng Babae sa Septic Tank 2. This may be due to the buzz Mr. Ballesteros brought when he won Best Actor at Tokyo Film Fest and Septic Tank's lack of huge promotion. If word-of-mouth becomes positive, then, we have a successful non-Vice Ganda comedy movie.

Seklusyonthe sole horror movie of the entries, captured third place. This is good news for Erik Matti whose coming from critically acclaimed but box office disappointment Honor Thy Father, Seklusyon fared better than HTF because it's more accessible to the general audiences than the latter. Also, as I said earlier, this is the only horror movie in town which could pull horror fans who are hungry for a movie of their genre.

Meanwhile, Ang Babae sa Septic Tank 2 managed to get the fourth position in the race.

Again, this is as of 8PM yesterday. Evening screenings will add more to these early numbers. Although these four will likely continue to be in this positions (unless Saving Sally managed to get the talk of the town in the coming weeks or this year's MMFF Best Picture will come from the four above).
