'The Super Parental Guardians' box office success: What does this mean to MMFF and the whole Philippine Box Office
The Super Parental Guardians is undeniably another box office success from duo Vice Ganda and Coco Martin. Without opening on an MMFF season, the film has still managed to pull in a huge number that no MMFF movie this year can achieve and is still playing in theaters outside of Metro Manila. What does this mean to this year's MMFF entries and the whole box office in the country?
First of all, Both The Super Parental Guardians and Enteng Kabisote 10 were rejected from this year's MMFF. This lead them to releasing both movies on an earlier date. Releasing on Bonifacio Day was proven to be a success. Parental Guardians broke the record for the biggest opening day gross for a local movie. And the movie continued to lead the box office until Rogue One started playing. This should be good news right? If Vice Ganda can broke records 1 month away from MMFF season and can still play during the said festival, this would mean more money which is the first reason why they want to enter the MMFF season. Using these to preview the MMFF entries would be a huge help as well.
But remember that this is only applicable for surefire/buzzy blockbusters. Last year's much buzzed A Second Chance make huge business at the said time while 2014's Past Tense and 2013's Call Center Girl did okay business. This year's Enteng Kabisote 10 was even overshadowed by Disney's Moana.
Also, The Super Parental Guardians is now 1 month old. Audience might want go in the theaters again. The tradition is still there. MMFF entries only need to heavily promote their film. Promote them that their movies are accessible to the general audience. A more engaging trailer is a factor too.
Overall, this box office success of Parental Guardians is actually a win-win for everyone. The only concern next year would be a Vice Ganda movie being accepted again in the festival.
