Minions take over box office once again with a lower 'Despicable Me 3'; 'Wonder Woman' calms

Gru and his Minions takes the lead this week amid lower returns. Despicable Me 3 opens to PHP 93.6 million (est. $ 1.9M). That's far cry from PHP 188 million ($ 4.2M) opening of Minions (2015) and $ 2.9M  of Despicable Me 2 (2013). 

This may suggest that the Minion hype has calmed down in the country although this number remains impressive for a fourth entry (counting Minions). Another thing to consider is the strong marketplace at the moment. Coming off from the huge success of Wonder Woman which may have stolen the family audience and the anticipated opening of Transformers: The Last Knight (which is also expected to fall from its predecessor) next week, audience may have skipped this one.

With Transformers and Spiderman opening in the next weeks, this will likely fall hard. Expect total north of PHP 160 million.

UPDATED: After two weeks of surprisingly fantastic numbers, Wonder Woman  has calmed down this week. The DC adventure fell 59 percent this week with PHP 46.88 million which increases its total to PHP 494 million ($ 9.9M). That is already higher than Man of Steel (PHP 388 million/$ 8.9M). With Tranformers: The Last Knight eating up most of the screens, this already successful superhero movie is bound to end north of PHP 500 million which ranks it as one of the highest grossing films in the country.

The Mummy experienced a standard blockbuster drop this week. The Tom Cruise's pic grossed PHP 36.9 million (off 57 percent). In two weeks, it has already collected PHP 151.9 million in the country.
