'Valerian' leads; 'Kita Kita' surprises; 'Dunkirk' also debuts
It's a busy week at the box office. Sci-fi epic Valerian and the City of the Thousand Planets and Kita Kita lead the box office.
The $200 million sci-fi opened to number one in the country, according to Deadline, which puts its opening around PHP 50-60 million. That's a fine opening for an unknown property without a bankable star (Cara Delivigne may be popular here because of Suicide Squad and Paper Towns but she is not proven to be bankable).
But the bigger story this weekend is Kita Kita starring Alessandra De Rossi and Empoy Marquez. The 10 million budgeted feel-good romantic comedy opened strong in the country. There are no accurate report of its first five-day gross although sources say that the movie made PHP 25 million on Sunday alone which makes it a strong contender for number one this week. As of Wednesday (July 26, 2017), the movie has already banked PHP 90 million. With strong word-of-mouth, this can likely save face from upcoming competition Finally Found Someone and can likely end its run around PHP 150 million which makes it a blockbuster hit.
Inception and Interstellar may have great week-to-week holds but both did so-so in the Philippines. The same is likely happening for Christopher Nolan's new epic Dunkirk. There are no data given by Warner Bros. (or Box Office Mojo) but it's likely that the movie opened in third place this weekend. This is bound to play in the long run since it will hold the IMAX theaters for a long time.
Now on its third week, Spiderman: Homecoming fell 64.9 percent this week with PHP 29.92 million. The third Spiderman reboot has now collected PHP 364.92 million which is trailing below The Amazing Spiderman 2's three week total (PHP 429.69 million).
Transformers: The Last Knight added PHP 0.42 million this week lifting its 5-week total to PHP 286 million. Meanwhile, Despicable Me 3's 6-week total is now at PHP 173 million.
