'Transformers 5' runs with fewer gas in the Philippines with PHP 165.9 million opening

After a steady opening day, Transformers: The Last Knight collapsed on full week numbers continuing the franchise fatigue in the country (Fast & Furious, Pirates, & Despicable Me). The fifth-quel opened to PHP 165.9 million which is lower than Age of Extinction (PHP 240M+) and Dark of the Moon (PHP 209M).

A handful of factors can be attributed to this lower opening. Fatigue for this franchise seemed to be more visible now. Reviews haven't been kind (this franchise never was) which is needed for the fifthquel movie. And competition this time is stronger than ever before (Wonder Woman breaking records and a week-to-week strong box office openings from Pirates, Mummy, & Despicable Me 3). With Spiderman, Apes, & Dunkirk roll-outs two weeks from now, expect a usual blockbuster drop this week and huge drops in the coming weeks. But still, this is a strong number for an 8 year old franchise.

Despicable Me 3 claims second place with PHP 30.87 million lifting its two week total to PHP 145 million. Gru and the Gang is currently pacing behind Minions (PHP 269M) and Despicable Me 2 (PHP 201M), both also playing in 3D.

With Transformers eating most of the screens, Tom Cruise's starrer The Mummy collapsed 83 percent this week with PHP  6.2 million. In three weeks, it has already banked PHP  163.73 million.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar's Revenge - PHP 0.24M; Total - PHP 161.85 million

There are no data for Wonder Woman this week but it is expected to pass PHP 500M this week.
