Which 2017 movie can step out 'Beauty and the Beast' as the country's highest grossing film?
Disney reports that the tale as old as time has now grossed PHP 667.46 million is now the highest grossing film of all time in the country beating last year's Captain America: Civil War. Every year, the country's all time highest grossing movie gets replaced. Can Beauty and the Beast be beaten this year (again)? Here are the movies that has the potential to steal that record:
The Fate of the Furious (April)
The last entry, Furious 7, grossed PHP 447 million in the country two years ago without direct competition. This time, it will open against a Kathniel movie (Can't Help Falling in Love) and an animated movie (The Boss Baby) although the three have different target demo and the hype is not as high as the previous one. But again, anything is possible for the country's box office. PHP 400 million seems likely.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (April)
Guardians of the Galaxy was a surprise Marvel breakout. The movie did fine in the country with PHP 232 million. Three years after, the sequel will be released on a historical date - the last week of April. This is where Marvel breaks records for years now (Iron Man movies, Avengers movies & last year's Captain America: Civil War). Chris Pratt is more popular now thanks to the post-GOTG buzz and Jurrasic World. If there is a movie that can hugely improve from it predecessor, this one would be it although breaking the all-time record seems far from being reachable.
Spiderman: Homecoming (July)
Before Avengers and Transformers's dominance the local box office, it was Spiderman. Spiderman 3 was the country's all time highest grossing film until Avengers and Transformers surpass it. The biggest problem it has is: fatigue. The Amazing Spiderman went below Spiderman 3 and the sequel passed the Spiderman 3 by a small distance. With him joining the MCU Universe and strong competition (Despicable Me 3), can Spidey pull it off again? Maybe.
Justice League (November)
Despite negative reviews, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice made around PHP 500 million in the country. If this gets better reception than BvS, then this superhero team-up could steal the record from the Beast.
Other potential movies:
Transformers: The Last Knight (June). Another franchise that could experience fatigue and will also experience tough competition.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi (December). Star Wars hasn't really been too strong in the country's box office and will likely fall below The Force Awakens.
